Walk 26 Feb 2017 JD

Thanks to Martin bates for another fantastic Winter Walk, summary below.

Nine brave sailors met for a windy walk taking in history around Askam and Ireleth on the Duddon estuary. The walk started with inspection of a sample of Hematite then past the flooded Park iron ore mine. The bricks at the Askam brick works proved to be very briefly diverting before splashing (shallow mud) across some fields to Ireleth. We then descended across the drained (?) fields to "Thunder island" (Dun...nerholme) and had lunch looking up the Duddon estuary in the lee of some lime kilns. The beat towards Askam slagbank "pier" and the sand dunes at Roanhead was interrupted for twitching and 24 different species were seen by most of the group! After all learning how to fill a car tyre with foam, a minority group took respite at the Brown Cow in Dalton.
